Ruby Stain Newsletter

New Patterns

Sadly we shall never know what Book 8 of the Victorian Glass series by Bill Heacock would have contained. He talks about it in Volume 7 indicating that the volume will include novelties, souvenirs, boxes and toothpicks. However, in preparation for Volume 8 he did extensive color photography of one ruby stain collection that generally does not contain these items. Perhaps he was going to add new patterns that had come to his attention. The plan also was to include other stains.

The state of the manuscript when he could work no more is a matter of different stories. One person says only a few notes, etc. while another states that he was aware of three complete copies of the manuscript. I believe that we shall never know.

So in a small way this section of the Newsletter is my attempt to bring Volume 8 to life, albeit in small bites.

AMERICAN Ruby Stained Glass American by Fostoria
MFR: Fostoria Glass Company
YOP: 1915 to
NAME: OMN
OMN: No. 2056 American
AKA:
REF: Weatherman, H.; Fostoria: It's First Fifty Years; 1972.

What "old glass" would "antique" malls fill their spaces with if it wasn't for this pattern?

It is a marriage. The base has a darker ruby stain and traces of gold while the top is lighter. The base came out of Jack Burk's old basement store before he moved to the surface.

Ruby Stained Ball and Swirl MugBALL AND SWIRL
MFR: McKee & Brothers
YOP: ~~1894
NAME: Ruth Webb Lee; Vic. Glass; Plate 27 AKA: Swirl and Ball, Rea?
OMN: Ray
REF: Moredock & Adams; Pattern Glass Mugs; 1995; Jenks & Luna; EAPG; 1990.

Note that Revi [American Pressed Glass and Figural Bottles; 1964; p. 57.] attributes this mug to Alexander J. Beatty & Sons with reissue by US Glass after 1891. The advertisement shows the mug with a tin top, possibly slotted as a bank. Revi states that it is the Rea pattern.

There are apparently some 30 forms in this pattern. Has anyone seen anything other than the mug in ruby stain? Metz [1952] notes a "red flashed" goblet at Pattern #1616.

Adams and Jenks cite 3 sizes of these mugs. The above does not seem to fit any of the sizes specified by Adams. It is 3 3/16" tall.
